Session 1
Building Community – Who will I be working with?
We hired you to work as a team in a camp community with 40 to 45 other counselors. How wonderful would if be if you walked into camp and everyone called you by name? It would be super terrific if they knew 3 to 5 facts about you! You would think that you had just walked into a very special community – a caring community where others took time to learn about you! WOW! You can help make that happen!
Task
- Build community – Go to the Profiles link and read the information about the directors, assistant directors, and other staff members. Challenge yourself to begin recognizing names with pictures and facts about each person.
- Create your own profile – Click here!
Session 2

Session 3
Physical Safety
A safe camping environment seems easy to understand. Safety is a very basic need and is extremely important. In order to become a great counselor, perform your job flawlessly, and be able to assist, protect, and guide all Foley campers, you need to completely understand and execute the Physical Safety Guidelines of Camp Foley.
Tasks
1. Read the Physical Safety – Make sure you understand all steps, procedures, and protocols.
2. Watch the Blood borne Pathogens Video – Think about the different places and scenarios in camp exposure may take place.
3. Watch Tick Check Video – Think of your own way that you can relay the importance of doing tick checks to the kids.
Session 4

Camper MESH
M.E.S.H. stands for Mental, Emotional, Social Health. Each camper’s health is more than physical and it is our goal as a Team of Counselors to work with the entire health of the individual. In this section, you will be learning 3 Behavior Management Skills to bring with you to camp that are important in fulfilling this goal – Supervision, Empathy and Listening. Next you will learn practical tips to handle three MESH challenges, from the voices of teenagers, that you will most likely be faced with this summer in our campers – Anxiety, ADHD, and the importance of Self-Confidence.
Tasks
1. For each of the following, read and/or watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet, “Behavior Management Strategies”.
**Be sure to save the worksheet to your desktop so you can email it to Alli.
- Empathy – Brene Brown on Empathy
- Listening – Improve Your Listening Skills with Active Listening and read PDF if video went too fast.
- “The Guts of Supervision“
2. For each of the following, watch the Ted talk and answer the questions on the worksheet, “MESH Challenges”.
**Be sure to save the worksheet to your desktop so you can email it to Alli.
- Overcoming anxiety – 9th grader Jonas Kolker

- Self Confidence: Self-Confidence – Caileigh Lydon
3. Email the completed “Behavior Management Strategies” and “MESH Challenges” worksheets to Alli.
Session 6
Staff MESH
Mental, Emotional and Social Health (MESH) looks very different for everyone. Some people thrive in social situations and struggle when left to the quiet of their own homes. Others need to have “Me” time in order to give their best to friends and family. In addition, more and more of our “Social” interactions are done on devices via social media, texting or other apps. Having healthy MESH while at camp will take work. We are asking you to push yourselves to disconnect to connect. We are asking you to be around lots of people, including kids, who are demanding of your time and energy. We are asking you to stretch your own abilities – which is part of the reason that a camp job is so rewarding. That said, this is a team effort. Communication, asking for help, leaning on your co-workers and knowing how to manage your own stress is very important.
Task 1: Relax Like a Boss
- Skim through/read: Relax Like a Boss
- Feel free to click on any of the links, read any of the articles or watch any of the videos – some very interesting stuff! You will be asked in the later tasks to look at some parts in more depth.
Task 2: Recognizing Symptoms of Stress
- Look at the infographic below and reference Section 2 of Relax Like a Boss – What are the Symptoms of Stress? Identify the 3 symptoms that typically effect you first when you start to feel abnormal levels of stress. If you are having trouble recognizing which three symptoms most pertain to you, think back to a scenario in the last six months where you have felt overly stressed. What was your body’s reaction to that stress? In a conflict, which reaction does your body typically have?
- Be ready to talk about those 3 symptoms during your next Chat with your Mentor. You will also discuss ways to manage stress while at camp. Returning Staff: Email Jordan
Task 3: Benefits of Stress and Changing your Mindset
- Read Relax Like a Boss: Section 4-Benefits of Stress
- Read Relax Like a Boss: Section 6-Change Your Mindset and look at the infographic below.
Task 4: Help us help you!
Complete the questionnaire below…don’t worry it is not a quiz!
Task 5: Optional (yet suggested) Challenge #1
Use your phone to set a limit of Social Media and Screen time for yourself for the 3 days of a weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). On any given camp day, you will typically have 1-2 hours of time available for checking instagram, messaging family and friends or watching all the super smart videos you watch on YouTube. Challenge yourself to limit yourself to 1 hour/day of Social Media and Messaging time. Report back. How did it go?
Task 6: Optional (yet suggested) Challenge #2
During your interview we talked about people that are our “Constant Contact” people (best friends, parents, siblings, significant others). At camp we will have less time to interact with those people. Pick a weekend, let those people know what you are doing and then don’t talk to them for 3 days. Sounds silly but we want you to feel connected and jump in to your camp job with both feet. Having people on the outside pressure you to spend time away from your co-workers, campers and other camp fun can cause stress and create a situation that causes you to have a less than optimal experience at Foley. Practice makes perfect – may as well start now. Report back. How did it go?
Session 7
Activity & Facilitation
Camp Skills
At camp we have our “Normal Camp Activities” as well as a lot of other fun stuff that is done at random times through out the sessions. You were all hired to teach 1-2 normal activities but may have skills in several other activities as well. Session 6 will focus on getting to know what other skills you have beyond what you were specifically hired to do.
Task 1:
1. Fill out the “Activity Skills” questionnaire. At the end of the questionnaire there is a place you can fill in skills that weren’t included but that you think we would want to know.
2. Come to camp ready to pass on some of your passions or signatures to campers. “Be the activity”!
Individually Assigned Prep Work
This is where we individualize to make your prep work important to you and your responsibilities at camp. You are responsible to do only what is assigned to you!
Task 2:
- Find your name below and download the PDF files that are assigned to you. Follow the directions on the PDF files to complete the pre-camp work for your activity area or other work as assigned.
*This is NOT a complete list! Please keep checking to see more things that may be assigned to you!
Many of the activities have supplemental books or information that will either be emailed or snail mailed to you. Some of have mulitiple PDFs you will need to download to complete the assignments. Let us know if you don’t have what you need to complete these assignments!

Session 8
Managing the Cabin
You are here to partner with parents to develop confident, responsible, and respectful youth who gain skills andhave fun through a quality camp experience in a youth centered community. It doesn’t just begin and end with the activities. The activities only supplement the development that happens on a daily basis in and out of your cabin and in your daily camp interactions. In order to be a positive leader, mentor and role model of your cabin and to be able to nurture the development process you need to be equipped with proper knowledge to guide you. So pay attention and really understand what Managing the Cabin truly means.

Course Evaluation
Thank you for taking time to complete the course! Although it may seem like a lot of work, now you are better prepared for your job as a counselor this summer. You are well on your way to being a fully trained Camp Foley Counselor. The next step of training will happen at camp.
Your final assignment is to take a minute to let us know how we did. The more information you can give us the better we can make the course for next summer’s staff. Thank you in advance!
We encourage you to keep connected; check out the new profiles and ask questions. We’ll see you this summer!
Task
Complete the evaluation.
