The Biggest Myth About Summer Camp: It’s Just About Fun
When you think of summer camp, what comes to mind? Canoeing on sparkling lakes, laughing around a crackling campfire, or roasting the perfect marshmallow? While these iconic images paint a picture of fun-filled days, they often overshadow the deeper purpose of camp. When we ask campers why they keep coming back to Camp Foley, a very popular answer is “it’s fun!”. Is Camp Foley just fun? The truth is, camp is a powerful catalyst for growth, grit, investigation, and independence. Sound familiar?
At our camp, we partner with parents to help campers grow, gain grit, investigate, and gain independence. These aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the foundation of our mission and the real magic behind what happens when kids come to Camp Foley.
Growth Beyond the Comfort Zone
Summer camp provides a unique setting where kids can stretch their boundaries in a supportive, nurturing community. Whether it’s climbing a towering rock wall for the first time, navigating Whitefish Lake in a canoe, or simply meeting new people, campers are constantly faced with opportunities to grow. These moments, often disguised as simple activities, teach perseverance, confidence, and resilience—skills that extend far beyond 2 or 3 weeks at Foley.
Building Grit Through Challenges
Grit—that blend of passion and perseverance—is a skill that’s hard to teach in a classroom but comes naturally at camp. Campers learn to tackle challenges head-on, whether they’re trying to master a new skill or work through a disagreement with cabinmates. Every challenge they overcome reinforces their ability to keep going when things get tough, an essential trait for future success. It may be controversial but we think it is a GOOD thing when kids fail at camp. Not every camper can climb the wall or win a fencing bout on the first try. When campers fail, they learn to overcome that feeling of loss or frustration and try again. That’s grit!
Investigating Passions and Interests
Camp isn’t just a place for structured fun; it’s also a playground for curiosity. From arts and crafts to environmental science and sports, campers have the chance to explore a variety of interests. This hands-on investigation often sparks lifelong passions. Who knows? That camper who spent hours experimenting with tie-dye techniques or stargazing on a clear night might become tomorrow’s artist or astrophysicist. I (Ally Daily) personally found a love for Fencing after first encountering it here at Foley. The best part of our activity sign up system is that it is entirely up to the campers to pick what they do. Campers get to choose to try lots of different activities or picking the same ones to keep building skills.
Gaining Independence in a Safe Space
For many kids, camp is their first real taste of independence. Away from the familiar routines of home, they’re tasked with making decisions, solving problems, and managing responsibilities—whether that’s keeping track of their belongings or learning how to work as a team. These experiences help kids develop a sense of autonomy and self-reliance that prepares them for life’s future adventures. Independence is a vital skill for children, and prepares them for the big transitions in life. Someday every child will need to leave the nest, it will go so much smoother if they have practice here at Camp Foley.
Fun as the Gateway to Growth
Of course, fun is still at the heart of the camp experience. The laughter, joy, and shared adventures create an environment where kids feel safe, connected, and open to learning. But make no mistake: the fun is the gateway to something much deeper. It’s through these joyful moments that campers discover their potential, forge lasting friendships, and gain the tools they need to thrive.
So, the next time someone says Camp Foley is just about fun, feel free to smile and set the record straight. Camp Foley is about so much more. It’s where kids grow into the best versions of themselves, one s’more at a time.
