Check out this blog written by Debbie Vazquez, one of our international staff. Read about why she chose to work at Camp Foley…
Why did I decide to work at Camp Foley? My answer is simple, as in Peter Pan, I still have the heart of a child. Since I was a little girl I had always dreamed of going to a camp like the ones in Disney movies, such as Parent Trap, Bunk’d, or Camp Rock, but I never had the opportunity. Because of that, I wanted to fulfill that dream from another perspective.
Since I turned 16, I started getting involved in all kinds of events in high school to work with kids in recreational activities, dynamics, games, spiritual retreats, etc. However, I didn’t want to stop there. I wanted to take it to another level and fulfill my dream to live in a real life camp. I consider myself a person who is passionate about living life to the fullest and sharing my joy with others. For this reason, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and not just stay in my hometown. I wanted to experience a whole new adventure in the best camp in the United States that I could find. That’s when I grabbed my computer, opened Google and searched for “Best Camp in the US”. The first option that came up was Camp Foley and I can now say that Google was 100% right.
Just by coincidence, a friend of mine had told me that her brothers were going to camp in Minnesota this summer and without knowing we were talking about the same camp! There were so many coincidences that led me to live this incredible experience that it is hard not to think that it was all part of destiny to get to know this place full of magic, smiles, the smell of campfire and marshmallows.
Coming to work as a counselor at Camp Foley was the best decision I have made so far in my life. The energy and welcomeness of this place is indescribable and watching the children enjoy every activity fills my heart with tenderness and love. Without a doubt, I can say that more than a job, being a counselor at a camp like Camp Foley is a vocation. In one of my last cabin councils with my 3rd session girls, I told them that the most valuable thing that camp definitely leaves each one of us with is to show us the best version of ourselves.
