Canoeing
At Canoeing, campers learn basic parts of the canoe and paddle, basic strokes, boarding and debarking, successful maneuvering and safety and rescue procedures. Camp Foley offers awards in Canoeing from Novice to Advanced based on the guidelines of the American Canoe Association. Campers can sign up for Canoe Trips as well!
Fishing
Reel in the “big one” at Fishing! Campers set out on Foley’s Pontoon to fish the Whitefish Chain of Lakes, which offers walleye, northern pike, bass and various panfish. Open-faced reels, lures and bait are provided. Campers learn safety precautions, proper casting, hook removal and baiting. At Social Fishing, campers kick back on the docks with friends and use camps famed bamboo fishing poles for a more relaxed form of fishing!
Sailing
Foley counselors that instruct Sailing are trained in US Sailing Association teaching techniques. Campers can earn awards in both Sail BICs (Dinghy and Flying Spinnaker) and Sail Hartleys & 420s (Seaman, Mate and Skipper).
Sail BICs and Hartleys/420s
There is a Sailing class for every camper at Foley. Our beginners and younger campers start in our O’pen BICs and learn to rig and de-rig with a partner, capsize and recovery, safety rules and parts of the boat. As campers progress in skill they learn to sail the JYs and 420s and become more comfortable skippering. At this level, campers work on skillfully sailing the points of sail, proper tacking and jibing and skippering a course.
Sail Racing
Our more experienced sailors sign up for Sail Racing and dedicate two activity periods a day to become more skillful sailors. In Sail Racing, campers learn to launch and land from the dock, proper body position, how to read the wind, sail position and trim, and sail racing techniques and skills. Campers participate in daily races.
Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing
Every summer, campers love to challenge themselves at the waterfront by trying new things at Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing every day. Foley counselors that instruct these activities are experienced and skilled boat drivers who can teach all campers from beginner to advanced. Campers have the opportunity to earn awards and learn new tricks.
Waterskiing
Waterskiing is definitely one of the most popular activities at Camp Foley. Our program was highlighted in an issue of WaterSki magazine and was ranked one of the top 100 summer camp waterski programs. Foley has also been noted as one of the top 11 summer camp waterski programs in the United States and is a USA Water Ski affiliated camp.
Foley counselors that instruct Waterskiing are experienced and skilled waterskiers and boat drivers. Campers can earn awards based on the National Water Ski Association from Beginner to Expert.
Windsurfing
Windsurfing instruction and awards are based on US Sailing’s, “Teach Windsurfing Right.” Foley offers extra-wide Starboard boards and more traditional challenging boards as well as different size sails so that all campers can succeed at Windsurfing. Campers learn proper stance, wind direction, tacking and jibing and techniques for sailing up and down wind. Qualified and experienced counselors guide campers from the Windsurfing dock and small boats.
Activities at the Swimdock
Swim Lessons
Camp Foley offers swim lessons for those campers that haven’t passed the Foley Safety and Endurance Swim Check. It’s a great opportunity for campers to become comfortable and gain confidence with their lake-swimming abilities! Campers are instructed by WSI certified counselors and work on improving skills and specific strokes. Swim Lessons are taught under the guidelines of the American Red Cross’s Progressive Swimming Program.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is the perfect way to spend time in Whitefish Lake on a warm summer day. Campers learn how to effectively use snorkeling equipment, different water entries and surface dives and the different kicks. Campers can earn their Muskrat Award or go on a Snorkeling Excursion to earn their Beaver.
Water Fitness and Water Games
Campers love to play around in the water at Water Fitness and Water Games. Some Water Fitness and Games activities include: Water Basketball, Greased Watermelon, Water Aerobics, Whiteboard Yoga and different races and relays.
